If you are new to area, you will quickly hear the phrase “Titletown”. At first, it may seem like a self appointed title due to the major NFL franchise Green Bay so proudly supports, and it is; but there is a more significant meaning to the majority of the Bay's residents.
This is a great source of pride in Green Bay, and will certainly be a topic of conversation if you spend more than 5 minutes in any bar, restaurant or gas station. You will realize the name “Titletown” comes from the 3 consecutive Superbowl victories spanning from 1966-1968, albeit, the first “official” Superbowl didn't actually attain it's name until 1967; the prior game was considered a “Championship.”
It's easy to see that a record like that, just south of 50 years old; still holds salt in a town of just over 300,000 residents. Which if you think about it, is an impressive accomplishment. With a the smallest populace supporting a major NFL franchise, you have to wonder where does all this money come from?
That reason is why Green Bay are recognized as some of the most die hard loyal fans in the industry. Having to support a 92 player system (1 all the way up to 110 million, that is a significant amount of income to support.
And it comes from the fans,
Green Bay is the only major NFL team to be owned, in part, by the fans. No other city delegates shares to the population that supports them. This is the singular reason that fans will “bleed green and gold” until the day they die. It also solidifies a massive portion of the local economy. The fans certainly do not mind paying a little extra in taxes, and buying over priced memorabilia (and especially $250 per share of stock, that holds no monetary value) to support their home team.
So, if you are new to the area and you want to make a few friends, football is the easiest way to do it. Green Bay fans have a notorious reputation for being accepting fans from other teams; they understand it's all in good fun (unless you are a Bears fan, and to a lesser extend, Vikings Fan)
Just never speak bad of cheese or beer!
