Why is it called "cheesehead?"

Just think, if a gentlemen by the name of Ralph Bruno, had not cut a piece of couch foam from his mothers living room set in 1987, what would Wisconsin fans be wearing on their head today in 2014?

Oddly enough, the first "cheese hat" was not officially worn at a Green Bay Packers game, but rather a Milwaukee Brewers game. With no college degree, or formal education, Mr. Bruno came across the idea thinking it would be funny; but attending the 1987 Brewers baseball game, he had no idea how popular it would become.

"I was reupholstering my mother's couch when I got the idea," Bruno said Friday from Wisconsin. "People from Chicago would also call people from Wisconsin 'cheeseheads' in sort of a negative connotation.

Launching a sort of "grassroots" marketing campaign, Bruno hit up local sporting events pitching his whares, and to his amazment...

It caught on.

Now, almost 30 years later the cheese head is a cornerstone of pride for the citizens of Green Bay (and Wisconsin), and also for the ingenuity of a simple idea brought to mainstream by some hard work and a clever idea.
