Your Lymph System

Here is the last or our 4 part series from our fantastic guest blogger:
Cathy Allen LPNCertified Reflexologist for Feet & Hands at Reflexology

Your Lymph System

The lymphatic system, or lymph system as it is also called, is a system made up of glands, lymph nodes, the spleen, thymus gland and tonsils. It bathes our body’s cells and carries the body’s cellular sewage away from the tissues to the blood, where it can be filtered by two of the body’s main detoxification organs: the liver and kidneys. This sewage is made up of the byproducts of our bodily processes, over-the-counter and prescription drugs, illicit drugs, cigarette toxins, other airborne pollutants, food additives, pesticides and other toxins.
80 percent of women have sluggish lymphatic systems and that getting them flowing smoothly is the key to easy weight loss and improved feelings of well-being.
If you are suffering from injuries, excess weight or cellulite, or pain disorders like arthritis, bursitis, headaches or others, a sluggish lymphatic system may be playing a role.  Here are 11 ways you can get your lymph flowing smoothly.
1.  Breathe deeply. Our bodies have three times more lymph fluid than blood, yet no organ to pump it. Your lymph system relies on the pumping action of deep breathing to help it transport toxins into the blood before they are detoxified by your liver. So breathe in that sweet smell of healing oxygen. Breathe out toxins.
2.  Get moving. Exercise also ensures the lymph system flows properly. The best kind is rebounding on a mini trampoline, which can dramatically improve lymph flow, but stretching and aerobic exercise also work well.
3.  Drink plenty of water. Without adequate water, lymph fluid cannot flow properly. To help ensure the water is readily absorbed by your cells, I frequently add some fresh lemon juice or oxygen or pH drops.
4.  Forget the soda, trash the neon-colored sports drinks, and drop the fruit “juices” that are more sugar than fruit. These sugar-, color- and preservative-laden beverages add to the already overburdened workload your lymph system must handle.
5.  Eat more raw fruit on an empty stomach. The enzymes and acids in fruit are powerful lymph cleansers. Eat them on an empty stomach for best digestion and maximum lymph-cleansing benefits. Most fruits are digested within 30 minutes or so and quickly help you feel better.
6.  Eat plenty of green vegetables to get adequate chlorophyll to help purify your blood and lymph.
7.  Eat raw, unsalted nuts and seeds to power up your lymph with adequate fatty acids. Choose from walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, Brazil nuts, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.
8.  Add a few lymph-boosting herbal teas to your day, such as astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, pokeroot or wild indigo root tea. Consult an herbalist or natural medicine specialist before combining two or more herbs or if you’re taking any medications or suffer from any serious health conditions. Avoid using herbs while pregnant or lactating and avoid long-term use of any herb without first consulting a qualified professional.
9.  Dry skin brush before showering. Use a natural bristle brush. Brush your dry skin in circular motions upward from the feet to the torso and from the fingers to the chest. You want to work in the same direction as your lymph flows—toward the heart.
10.  Alternate hot and cold showers for several minutes. The heat dilates the blood vessels and the cold causes them to contract. Avoid this type of therapy if you have a heart or blood pressure condition or if you are pregnant.
11.  Get Reflexology. Studies show that a reflexology can push up to 88 percent of stagnant lymph back into circulation. Reflexology frees trapped toxins and targets lymph flow in the body. Reflexology feels great and balances the entire body, plus it has wonderful lymph-stimulating effects.

Alkaline Diet Benefits

What Is The Acid-Base Balance (ABB)?
The ABB is vitally important and necessary for overall health. Acid-base imbalances can lead to diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, and heart diseases. Today, largely due to poor dietary habits, many people suffer from such imbalances.
The human body is a complex bio-energetic system, always striving to keep itself in balance. We call this process homeostasis. It is needed to maintain a stable, relatively constant condition of properties such as your temperature or pH.
The ABB is one of your body’s homeostatic mechanisms. It regulates the balance between acids and bases (alkalines) formed within your body and keeps your pH slightly alkaline (7.35 to 7.45) and corrects imbalances that may occur.
Acidosis is a condition where the pH of your blood falls below 7,35. This can lead to central nervous depression, coma, and even death.
Alkalosis, on the other hand, is when the pH of your blood rises above 7,45; resulting in over-excited nerves, muscle spasm, nervousness, and convulsions which may lead to death.

Typical Western Diet Is full Of Acid-forming Foods
Acidosis is by far the most common imbalance seen in our modern society. Alkalosis is relatively rare because our typical western or Standard American Diet is loaded with acid producing products and far too low in alkaline producing foods to neutralize those acids and keep your pH within tight borders.
Acidic pH can occur from an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload or immune reactions. Your body has to put a lot of effort and energy in the neutralizing process to prevent acidification. When your diet is not balanced, your body will steal alkaline material, such as calcium, out of your bones and teeth to neutralize the acids, increasing the risk of weak bones and osteoporosis.
Acidosis is also closely related to overweight and obesity as your body creates fat cells to carry acids away from your blood and vital organs. So fat is actually saving your life, as it is a response to alarming acid levels.
Acidification forms the base of many ailments such as osteoporosis, obesity, cancer, gout, migraine, premature aging, and several physical and emotional illnesses. By adjusting your diet you can fend off those ailments and do your body a big favor.

Alkaline Diet Helps to Balance pH levels
An alkaline diet provides the body with neutralizing compounds, so it doesn’t have to steal material from your body to maintain the same, slightly alkaline level. This doesn’t mean you have to throw out all acid forming foods, as you need them as well to avoid alkalosis. Balance is key here.
A good rule of thumb is to eat 60-80% of alkaline forming and 20-40% of acid forming foods.
Although it may seem that citrus fruits would have an acidic effect on your body, the citric acid they contain have an alkalizing effect. To set things clear, the food’s ability to form acids or alkaline’s within your body has nothing to do with the actual pH or sour taste of the food itself.
As an example: lemons are very sour, however after digestion, the end product is very alkaline. Meat on the other hand will test alkaline before digestion, but leaves acidic residues in your body and is known to be acidic forming, just like nearly all animal products.

What Are Acid Forming Foods
All food sources that contain high levels of protein and sugar are acid forming. Likewise, processed foods, soft drinks, coffee, artificial chemical sweeteners, and medication.
  • Most nuts and seeds
  • Grains or cereals
  • Cheese
  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Seafood
Only 20 to 40% of what you eat should come out of the acid forming list. Eat more and your body will have a hard time to neutralize all the acids within your body.

What Are Alkaline Forming Foods?
  • Fruits
  • Green vegetables
  • Root and tuber vegetables
  • Bulbous plants
  • Yogurt
  • Herbs and spices
60-80% of what you eat should come out of the alkaline forming list.

Health Hints: 15 Reasons You Should Be Drinking Lemon Water Every Morning/Day

If you are looking for an easy trick to improve your life and overall health, than look no further. Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning is a pretty simple routine to get into and will have tremendous effects on your overall health.

Since I started this simple and surprisingly healthy habit a few years ago, I definitely noticed the difference. Not only does the refreshing taste wake me up in the morning, it helps to kick start digestion and finalizes my body’s natural detoxification processes… And lemons are packed with vitamin C, B, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, enzymes, antioxidants, and fibers.

According to the Ayurvedic philosophy, choices you make regarding your daily routine either build up resistance to diseases or tear it down.

So what are you waiting for to jump start your day with this incredible easy morning routine. Its benefits are endless and I listed the 15 most important ones for you in this article.

1.    Improves Digestion
Lemon juice has a similar structure to your stomach’s juices and helps to loosen and flush out toxins from the digestive tract. Lemon juice can help ease indigestion, heartburn, and bloating. It also helps to move your bowels in the morning, hydrates your colon, stimulate bile production, and infuses water in your stool.
Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials. It encourages the liver to produce bile which is an acid that required for digestion. Efficient digestion reduces heartburn and constipation.

2.    Boost Immune System.
Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C, which helps strengthen the immunes system and fights cold and flu. But not only vitamin C is important for a good working immune system, iron is another important nutrient, and lemons improve the ability to absorb more iron from the food you eat. They’re high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function. Potassium also helps control blood pressure.

3.    Hydrates Your Body
It is important to stay hydrated, especially during the summer months. Plain water is best, but many people find this boring and are not drinking enough of it. That’s where lemon comes into play to make things more interesting. So feel free to not only start your day with lemon water, but drink as many glasses as you wish during the day to stay hydrated.

4.    Boost Energy
Lemon water gives you an instant boost of energy and improves your mood right at the start of your day.

5.    Promote Healthy and Rejuvenated Skin
Lemons are rich sources of antioxidants that prevent free radical damage. These free radicals are responsible for pre-mature aging of your skin. Vitamin C helps to maintain your skin’s elasticity to prevent the formation of wrinkles and decrease blemishes. Clears skin: The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear as well. It can actually be applied directly to scars to help reduce their appearance.

6.    Reduce Inflammation
Lemons have the ability to remove uric acid from your joints. Uric acid built-ups are one of the major causes of inflammation. Lemons are a diuretic: Lemons increase the rate of urination in the body, which helps purify it, toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate which helps keep your urinary tract and body healthy.

7.    Weight Loss Aid
Although lemon water on its own is no weight loss miracle, it can definitely help you to achieve faster and long term results. Lemons assist in fighting hunger cravings, boost metabolism, and give you a stuffed feeling, making it less likely to snack in between meals. Helps with weight loss: Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster.

8.  Alkalize Your Body
Although lemons have a sour taste, they are one of the most alkalizing food sources on Earth. Too many acids can cause inflammation, obesity, and major diseases like cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Balances pH: Drink lemon water every day and you’ll reduce your body’s overall acidity. Lemon is one of the most alkaline foods around. Yes, lemon has citric acid but it does not create acidity in the body once metabolized.

9.  Cleansing Properties
Lemons help your entire body to flush out more toxins to prevent built-ups and damage to your cells, tissues, and organs. It stimulates your liver to produce more enzymes and work more efficiently. Lemon juice works as a diuretic to keep your urinary tract toxin-free and can also change the pH levels which discourage bacterial growth. This is very helpful for people who often suffer from UTI (urinary tract infection). And like mentioned before, lemons loosen and flush out waste from your digestive tract and cleanse your colon.

10. Antibacterial and Antiviral Properties
Lemons have antibacterial and antiviral properties. They help fight the flu, cold, and soothe a sore throat. Although people who drink their daily lemon water every day are less likely to get these in the first place.

11. Reduce Mucus and Phlegm
Lemon water helps to reduce mucus and phlegm formation. People who drink cow’s milk are often more sensitive for mucus production. So starting your day with lemon water can definitely help to lessen mucus if you’re not ready to go dairy-free. Relieves respiratory problems: Warm lemon water helps get rid of chest infections and halt those pesky coughs. It’s thought to be helpful to people with asthma and allergies too.

12. Freshen Breath
Lemons freshens your breath and fight mouth bacteria. Although lemons are great for your overall oral health, avoid drinking or using it undiluted. The citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so don’t brush your teeth with it, but have a glass of lemon water instead. It can help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis.

13. Boost Brain Power
The high levels of potassium and magnesium show beneficial effects on our brain and nerve health. Lemon water can give you the boost you need to fight depression and stress. It creates mental clarity and more focus, making it a great drink for students or people with busy and stressful jobs.

14. Anti-cancer
Lemon’s antioxidants not only protect your skin from ageing, but also reduce the risk of several types of cancer. They are great in neutralizing acids as well. Cancer loves to grow in an acidic environment. Alkalizing your body may stop cancer cells to grow and may reduce the risk of getting cancer in the first place.

15. Get off Caffeine
Many people are able to get off caffeine by replacing their morning coffee by lukewarm lemon water. It gives a similar energy boost to wake your body and boost energy as one cup of coffee would.

How to Make Lemon Water
Making lemon water is super simple – 2 quarts of water and the juice from one fresh lemon. Toss the rind (outside) -Drink daily for the rest of your life J

How and when to drink water with lemon:
Use filtered water and place 2 quarts of water in a pitcher. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze the juice out of it. (There are really cool and easy squeezer on the market that squeeze the juice out in seconds). Throw the outsides away or use them for non-ingesting projects. DO NOT let the rinds soak in the water! Never put essential oils in your body! ONLY FRESH lemons or limes will be affective. DO NOT use plastic Lemons or limes, or canned or bottled or jarred, not even if they say “Real-Lemon” or “Organic”, you must cut a lemon or lime in half to use it. The others sources remain acid like battery acid and will not help possibly hurt your body. Bring this water in containers with you and all day drink this as you daily beverage.

Let’s talk turkey

This phrase “to talk turkey” means to speak frankly and without reserve; to talk hard facts, to get down to business.  So Let’s Talk Turkey J

You Guessed it… Thanksgiving Turkey!

Protein is the building block of the body. A moderate 4-ounce serving of turkey has about 35 grams of high-quality protein, as well as lots of heart-healthy potassium, plenty of phosphorus, and small amounts of calcium, magnesium, and iron.
Four ounces of turkey breast meat has about 30 mcg of selenium and the dark meat has about 45 mcg! The RDI for selenium is 70 mcg, but 200 mcg is a good target for optimal health. The almighty mineral selenium is a powerful antioxidant and is associated with lower rates of cancer. Turkey is also a great source of niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and zinc
Turkey fat is mostly comprised of the heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, and please understand that fat is not the enemy. Certain types of fat don’t serve us, but Turkey has happy fat!
