First Father’s Day – History and Trivia from The Purple Trail

• Father’s day was first recognized by Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd (now known as “the mother of Father’s Day”) whose father had as a single parent, raised his six children. She conceived the idea of celebrating Father’s Day while she was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.
• In the year 1916, US president Woodrow Wilson approved the idea of observing an annual Father’s Day. And in the year 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made Father’s Day a national event.
• After a couple of decades, President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day and issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in the year 1966. Then in the year 1972 President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made the Father’s Day celebration permanent. Since then this day is celebrated each year.
• Around 72% of Americans celebrate and acknowledge Father’s day.
• Do you know Father’s Day has acquired fourth position last year ( nearly 95 million Fathers Day cards were given last year in the United States) as the most popular card sending holiday, with an estimated $100 million sales figure.
• According to a survey, sons and daughters send 50% of the Father’s Day card to their dads. Nearly 20 percent of Fathers Day cards are purchased by wives for their husbands. That leaves 30 percent of the cards which go to grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles and “someone special.”
• Father’s Day is not a modern invention. It was first celebrated by a Babylonian youth named Elmesu, who carved a father’s Day card out of clay, around 4,000 years ago. His special card was to wish his father good health and long life.

North America is not the only place where Father’s Day is celebrated.

• In traditionally Catholic countries such as Spain and Portugal, Father’s Day is observed on March 19, the Feast of St. Joseph.
• Taiwanese celebrate Father’s Day on August 8, the eighth day of the eighth month, because the Mandarin Chinese word for eight sounds like the word for “Papa.”
• In Thailand, Father’s Day occurs on the king’s birthday, which for current King Bhumibol Adulyadej is December 5.

I grew up in Green Bay, moved back here last May. I like being back here, there is so much that has changed and some still the same. Good people, people who want to make a difference, and Green Bay is an upcoming place. I wish there were more organic, restaurants, more geared to healthy food, not just cheese! I love the farmers markets, and New Leaf coming, grateful for what is here and would like to see more.

Football season, I get to enjoy in my home, yeah, no fighting the traffic or looking for bathrooms, I enjoy watching the games in Sturgeon Bay with my 94yr old Father who is also from Green Bay, and avid fan.

Advice from Antonia:

When you feel yourself getting stressed out, your shoulders are up to your ears and you are trying to hold it all together, stop.  Take 2 minutes to breathe. In through your nose, out through your nose. I know you are already breathing, this is about conscious breathing. Breathe and feel all that "stuff" moving off of you. 

You have to feel, to heal. There isn't any shortcut, or bypass. What is important to know is that memories will never hurt you., feeling is the way in, the way through and the way out, to you being your authentic you.

You know how you keep telling yourself that the pain you have been experiencing for awhile will just get better by itself. That if you just forget about it, it will resolve itself. Your body will never lie to you. it's telling you to pay attention, take care of it, stop ignoring it and hoping the problems will go away.

Pay attention to your words, your thoughts, your actions. They speak volumes about how you are showing up every day. Want to show up differently?  Learn how to be a better listener and learn how to hear. To yourself and everyone else out there.

Breakfast on the Farms Begin Again

Never heard of breakfast on the farm? Then you are surely missing out on some amazing breakfast and the activities that follow at these local farms in the nearby country areas. Breakfast on the Farm is a very family friendly event that provides an affordable ticket price to enjoy a farm cooked meal which can include pancakes, eggs, porkies, muffins or bagels, homemade jams, and of course the cheese curds plus farm activities and tours.

They usually have indoor seating in a clean open barn or shelter so that you can enjoy your meal out of the sun, in some cases I have experienced farms that will put up large outdoor tent areas with tables and chairs underneath while you enjoy some of their featured music on stage.

Lines look long when you get there but move fast and it oh so worth the wait. Typically you’ll see all the volunteers cooking hundreds of eggs and pancakes right in front of your eyes and whipping them up faster than what you had imagined.

Breakfast on the Farm kicks off early typically 8 am and goes till about noon. After enjoying your breakfast you can explore the farm for their lineup of activities which can include farm tours, petting zoo, ice cream booths, horse-drawn carriage rides, music, kiddie tractor pulls, picture taking with baby calves, appearances by the ‘Fairest of the Fair’ and ‘Fair Royalty’ and much more. Each breakfast on the farm is put on by the owners therefore they always have something different to offer on the menu and the activities.

They use the fields for parking so don’t worry you’ll find a space, just be sure to put your sneakers because you can expect you’ll be doing walking. Parking is also usually free, another reason why you can’t deny a beautiful welcoming morning at the farm. Prices range $3-5 for children and $5-9 for adults. Everyone is so friendly and the experience is an undeniable educational awakening for everyone. You get to experience how dairy operation works day to day and learn more about the agriculture industry of Wisconsin.

Brats, Wisconsinite favorite

Did Ya Knows?    o   The bratwurst was originally brought to North America by German immigrants
   o   Wisconsin is the only state whose baseball stadiums sell more bratwurst than hot dogs

For those new to the area or want to know when and where to catch the next brat fry, keep reading below. Bratwurst is a common type of sausage in the United States, especially in the state of Wisconsin. It is a must-have item at most cookouts. Another version of the brat you will hear about in Wisconsin is the beer brat which is a combined formula of the bratwurst poached in beer, butter and onions prior to grilling over charcoal. Just to be clear for those reading about a brat for the first time, the easiest way to define a brat from a hot dog is that a brat is made from pork and spices. So the sausage is more flavorful and larger than a hot dog.

 

You can catch local restaurants in the Green Bay area that also like to make their versions of brat dishes for example beer brat dip for pretzels, crackers, and bread.  Or maybe you prefer a pizza layered with thinks slices of brats or a simple bowl of beer brat soup. In the Green Bay area you can occasionally catch brat fry’s at local Festival and Copps grocery stores as well as the East Towne Mall on Green Bay’s east side.

Do you roller skate or blade? Find out where you can go to do either.

Green Bay offers a very family friendly environment for you and your family to get some exercise and skate around and have some fun. Visit St. Mary’s Roller rink which is managed by Steve and Holly and where they strive to make sure everyone enjoys their visit to the rink. The roller rink is located within the St. Thomas Moore school building.

The Roller rink provides the use of skates or blades with your admission price or bring your in own to save a couple dollars. There is a concession area with a small sit down area. They have a coat rack area to hang your jackets and belongings.  Enjoy the lights, music, and interactive songs for kids like the limbo, conga and freeze skate.  A fun opportunity to socialize with friends on skates and get the benefits of the activity.
The benefits of skating are simple. It’s an amazing cardio workout. It works almost every major muscle group in the body and is more beneficial than running or cycling and is a safer way to work all those muscles.  I’m sure almost everyone can agree that kids today and even busy adults need all the help they can get to stay in shape and live a healthy lifestyle and roller skating can do just that.
1.       Skating provides fluid motion that keeps you from damaging your joints, helping you enjoy skating without the harsh impact.
2.       Helps improve leg strength development
3.       Skating works legs, glutes, arms, and core as you balance your body and power through the skating motion.
4.       You can burn a lot of calories with just a few laps around the floor.

Roller skating also helps children develop motor and listening skills through different games at the rink.

At St. Mary's Roller Rink, Family Skating sessions are open to the public and are on the 1^st and 3^rd Sunday of the month from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. Every Friday there is also open skating from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. The cost is $4.00 per person with a maximum of $20.00 per family. Children under the age of 5 skate free! Yep that’s right so you can’t miss another opportunity to bring the little ones in to get exercise. Children 14 and younger do need to be accompanied by an adult.

St. Mary’s Roller Rink also offers private skating parties, which can be schedule with the managers prior to the date requested. They can accommodate small or large groups. Host your birthday parties, family gatherings, have a girls or guys night out, almost any occasion you can think of. For the private parties, you are allowed to bring food like frozen pizzas and they can bake them for you in the concession stand area. However, drinks must be purchased from the rink-no carry-ins. Please call the rink to get further details on prices and to find a time that best works for you.

St. Mary’s Roller Rink is a non-for-profit rink and all proceeds collected are donated to St. Mary of The Angles Parish.

Roll one or two or three

The Best in Bowling Alley’s in Green Bay and the surrounding areas.

Some of the most hilarious fun times I’ve had are at a bowling alley with friends and family. Just recently had my 22^nd birthday at Willow Creek Bowling alley and we came on a Friday night which means…Cosmic bowling fun! It was a perfect atmosphere for everyone involved. The staff was very accommodating and sort of having fun with us while we celebrated. When we had asked another resident on what she thought, the feelings were mutual.

MS. Barnes, missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had this to say on her outing one night;

“Bowling is one of my favorite activities but I rarely go. I mean let’s be honest; bowling doesn’t exactly equate high-end fun. Maybe it’s just that I’m used to bowling alleys that play bad music, don’t have enough seats, and have that distinct old-French fry oil smell permeating the air and the shoes! It’s always hilariously embarrassing wearing a pair of ugly bowling shoes that have housed a million other feet. So when a group of fellow missionaries from the church I belong to wanted to go bowling I was torn between my desire to do something so unreasonably fun and the idea that I had to wear those awful shoes. I’m always up for a good time though, so I went ahead and looked towards Willow Creek Lanes. When we drove up to the building I honestly, thought we were pulling into an old lodge-the building was surprisingly pretty. They had 20 lanes to play on with plenty of seating at each lane, which was a plus. They had a great music playlist in the background, the staff was incredible, friendly and kind especially with a huge group like ours and it didn’t smell either. One of the other missionaries even mentioned that he would willingly buy a pair of the bowling shoes and wear it around. It was wonderful experience at Willow Creek Lanes and I would recommend this place of business to anyone or any group.”

I am sure many of us dread some of the things she mentioned earlier in her statement on the outgoings of bowling, however thanks to some local bowling alleys who keep it fresh, updated and keep a staff who can amp up the fun, bowling alleys can be a very fun rewarding experience for everyone.

A burger sounds good right now

A burger sounds good right now, right? Who can ever say no to that phrase, especially in Wisconsin? Where can you go to get a good burger or better yet, what place specializes in the making of a Wisconsin burger? When interviewing new residents of the Green Bay area, one had this to say when we asked them “where can you go to curb a craving for a burger?”

“I crave burgers surprisingly often and I am happy to say that I have found the perfect place to satisfy myself. By Main St. and Deckner Ave. on the east side of Green Bay, it is one of the oldest restaurants in Green Bay. Krolls east offers good food and good service for a fair price. On our venture there I had a large buttered burger, some jalapeño poppers and nearly the best cheese curds I’ve ever tasted. I ended my meal with a simple yet delicious New York style cheese cake, in my opinion the only good thing to come out of New York. It was well worth the price and we will definitely be visiting Krolls again.”

March is for Green and Green is for Garden

This week's post is to inspire the gardener in everyone. From small to big plants, colors of all sorts and even a peek into the trending fairy gardening.

I know gardening is not for everybody or you might not even want to get near plants because you just don't have that green thumb and everything dies (just like me). Well these local businesses make it easier for everyone interested in the gardening world. Even I grew a love for the making of fairy gardens.

Now to my knowledge, here are a couple of local flower shops and plant centers in the area who offer mini workshops or free seminars with themed crafts and information that the public can join in on. These classes give you the directions, visuals, information and hands on you need to get involved, so don’t be scared!

Workshops can be one-on-one or with a hand full of people and the place of business will have enough staff on hand to answer any questions. They typically will have the featured item already made, maybe even 2 so you can take a look. You can also of course walk around the shop and take a peek at the many other items for inspiration.

My first experience was with Ivy Trails in Green Bay and their workshop “Create an Indoor Winter Fairy Garden Class.” At first I was scared because this was a new place, new people, and I didn’t know if I was going to fit in. As soon as I had walked in, I was immediately greeted by the cashier and asked if I was here for the class and wanted anything to drink. I was very impressed within the first couple of minutes of interaction.

Then I walked into their greenhouse where there was long table of seating and each seat was prepped with our necessities to build the mini garden plus the staff handed out a packet of pictures of Fairy Gardens for reference. As we began the staffed offered to the 21+ adults, a glass of wine to help set the mood and feel comfortable. The people I sat between were probably just as nervous as me and we all began talking, sharing ideas and creativity. It was a very fun hands-on experience and these types of activities can be perfect for anyone and such a great activity to get your family out of the house in the winter.

If you would rather not give out your email then remember to like these businesses on Facebook and under the like button you can choose to follow and get notifications on the business facebook page so you are the first one to know what they are posting for the day or week. I usually opt for this when I do not find an “add to email list” button so that way I can stay connected with my local businesses.
