Get Involved With Your Community, Here's How

Get Involved with the Green Bay Area Newcomers and Neighbors Inc

For many years, we've been introducing ourselves to many people from all walks of life. Our diverse community welcomes people with open arms and can help you relocate and settle in to the area! In fact, our organization offers a wide array of services that can make your transition much smoother and more rewarding.

So how can you volunteer with us and learn to explore our resources? We have many opportunities, let me fill you in and you can choose any or all from the list below;

·         Work with others to create events that bring people together-especially effective ways for people new to the area to get to know and expand their networks

·         Communication is the key! Help connect with members and others by editing the website,  maintaining Facebook fan page, updating the community calendar, providing graphic design, proof reading, research and verifying information in the Green Bay Area Resource Guide.

·         Heighten our ability to serve members by assisting with office tasks such as data entry, bulk mailing, preparing information folders, phone calls, etc. Some of this work can be done in your home.

·         Extend our outreach to the community by delivering folders, placement of poster or referral cards and picking up materials.

Our mission is simple; “The mission is to welcome, promote and provide a means for introducing new residents and neighbors to the community and the opportunity to make new friends”

If you would like to get involved please send us an email, leave a comment or find us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. You may reach Joleen Allard at (920) 468-4289 or (920) 680-7437 or email her at joleen@greenbaynewcomers.com. Walking...Running....and Biking Oh My

This week the Green Bay Area Newcomers is bringing to you, the local trails in the area to get your exercise, enjoy a day in nature, or a place to whip out the camera and explore Wisconsin scenery. The 3 trails I will be mentioning today are the East River, the Fox River Trail, and Mountain Bay Trail. Most of the trails are part of the Wisconsin State Park System which is overseen by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also known as the DNR.

On the Fox River and Mountain Bay Trails, a daily pass or annual state trail pass is required for bicyclists, in-line skaters, and horseback riders-(on designated areas of the Fox River Trail). Daily passes are available at the trailheads and self-service locations along the trails. Annual state trail passes are valid at all Wisconsin state trails. There is no fee for walking or jogging on the trails or for trail users younger than 16.

The East River Trail is a 6.28mile trail running along the East River through Allouez, Bellevue, DePere and Ledgeview. Trail hours are from 8am-9pm. The trail is narrow and winding as it closely follows the contour of the East River so is more suited to leisurely paced activities. Park like scenery and smaller animals are usually found on this trail, along with the river and fish in it. The Trail will also take you through Green Isle Park, another environment blossoming with Green Bay nature, people, and sports activity.
Tips: no animals and motorized vehicles on the trail

The Fox River Trail is a 25-mile trail span along the Fox River from downtown Green Bay through Brown County Communities of Allouez, Depere, Rockland, Wrightstown and Holland. The trail includes a paved surface that will sooner transition into crushed stone.  When you get into Depere the trail scenery turns away from the river and gives new landscapes of light industrial structures. Furthermore, it will then transition one more time into rural and agricultural scenery.
Trail Hours are 5am-9pm and all bicyclists, walkers, joggers, rollerbladers, horseback riders, and walkers with pets are welcome. Daily passes are $4 and annual passes are $20 and are valid at all Wisconsin State Trails.

Tips: Dogs have to be on leashes and cannot extend pass 5 feet

No fee for walking/jogging on the trail

No fee for trail users under the age of 16

Public restrooms available along the trail

The Mountain Bay Trail is an 83-mile trail running from downtown Howard to Wausau. The trail offers year-round recreation to both the casual and the outdoor enthusiasts. Bikers, hikers and snowmobilers are welcome. The level grade and smooth surface make this trail suitable for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. Each bicyclist age 16 or older needs a Wisconsin State trail pass while using the trail. Children 12 years and older need a $4 Daily pass or $25 Annual Sticker pass; FREE 11 years and younger.

Tips: Pet need to be on a leash, 8 feet or shorter. You must pick up after your pet.
ATVS are not allowed on the trail

Do you roller skate or blade? Find out where you can go to do either.

Green Bay offers a very family friendly environment for you and your family to get some exercise and skate around and have some fun. Visit St. Mary’s Roller rink which is managed by Steve and Holly and where they strive to make sure everyone enjoys their visit to the rink. The roller rink is located within the St. Thomas Moore school building.

The Roller rink provides the use of skates or blades with your admission price or bring your in own to save a couple dollars. There is a concession area with a small sit down area. They have a coat rack area to hang your jackets and belongings.  Enjoy the lights, music, and interactive songs for kids like the limbo, conga and freeze skate.  A fun opportunity to socialize with friends on skates and get the benefits of the activity.
The benefits of skating are simple. It’s an amazing cardio workout. It works almost every major muscle group in the body and is more beneficial than running or cycling and is a safer way to work all those muscles.  I’m sure almost everyone can agree that kids today and even busy adults need all the help they can get to stay in shape and live a healthy lifestyle and roller skating can do just that.
1.       Skating provides fluid motion that keeps you from damaging your joints, helping you enjoy skating without the harsh impact.
2.       Helps improve leg strength development
3.       Skating works legs, glutes, arms, and core as you balance your body and power through the skating motion.
4.       You can burn a lot of calories with just a few laps around the floor.

Roller skating also helps children develop motor and listening skills through different games at the rink.
At St. Mary's Roller Rink, Family Skating sessions are open to the public and are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. Every Friday there is also open skating from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. The cost is $4.00 per person with a maximum of $20.00 per family. Children under the age of 5 skate free! Yep that’s right so you can’t miss another opportunity to bring the little ones in to get exercise. Children 14 and younger do need to be accompanied by an adult.

St. Mary’s Roller Rink also offers private skating parties, which can be schedule with the managers prior to the date requested. They can accommodate small or large groups. Host your birthday parties, family gatherings, have a girls or guys night out, almost any occasion you can think of. For the private parties, you are allowed to bring food like frozen pizzas and they can bake them for you in the concession stand area. However, drinks must be purchased from the rink-no carry-ins. Please call the rink to get further details on prices and to find a time that best works for you.

A Community Theatre giving it all to the community

The Green Bay Community Theater

A local theatre, bringing the city much more than your average show. A very fun high energetic company that brings a lot of opportunities to Green Bay and the surrounding cities and their residents.
Location:
122 N Chestnut Ave
Green Bay, WI 54306
920-435-6300

So who are these people? What are they exactly about?

Since its inception in 1936, Green Bay Community Theater has produced over 300 plays. Its home since 1966 has been the Robert Lee Brault Playhouse, a century-old church, which houses an acoustically perfect 193-seat theater with a 30' x 24' open-end stage.

GBCT is governed by a nine-member volunteer Board of Directors who set theater policy. Creative positions are filled on a show-by-show basis with independent contractors. Volunteers provide 99% of the labor at the theater. From actors and crew, to ushers and office assistants, the day-to-day operations are dependent upon volunteer energy from the community.

GBCT develops partnerships with local businesses, service organizations, schools and individuals: a program with Arts Administration majors from UW-GB is providing interns with valuable, resume-building experience. A partnership with On Broadway, Inc. is generating additional economic activity in the area. GBCT is expanding its programming and community outreach to serve the growing population of Northeast Wisconsin. Since its founding, GBCT has truly been a theater of, by, and for the community.

So how can we get involved? When is the next upcoming show?
